Background
John Embry appears to have used “Manhood Rituals” as the name for a series of projects over the years. Initially, the name was used for one-off volumes of erotic writing accompanied by photographs or illustrations. The first of these, “The Compound”, must have been produced before 1986 (when Embry sold Drummer to Tony DeBlase]]), since it is labelled as a Drummer publication. Another undated “Manhood Rituals 1“ is labelled as an Alternate publication, which was the banner under which Embry continued to publish material after the sale of Drummer. The ongoing magazine, published by Alternate, appears to have been produced after this one-off, based on the layout and typography.
