Mavety was born in Canada. After a short time as a teacher, he launched a mail-order business, House of Books. He moved to N.Y.C. after a time in California. Before becoming a publisher, Mavety worked in distribution through a company called Trojan Distributing Company, which handled titles such as Colt and Dilettante. Dilettante, edited by John Devere, was partially owned by Mavet’s company Modernismo Publications. When it folded in 1974 after 4 issues, Mavety offered to take over the magazine, which he relaunched in 1975 as Mandate.
Maverty was also the co-owner of Torso with Donald Embinder, publisher of Blueboy. When Embinder’s involvement in Torso waned after the death of his lover, Maverty moved it to New York.
