George Mavety

George Mavety (died 19 August 2000 at age 63) was the owner of a New York-based publishing company known at various times as Modernismo, Mavety Media Group, or MMG Services.
Mavety was born in Canada. After a short time as a teacher, he launched a mail-order business, House of Books. He moved to N.Y.C. after a time in California. Before becoming a publisher, Mavety worked in distribution through a company called Trojan Distributing Company, which handled titles such as Colt and Dilettante.
Dilettante, edited by John Devere, was partially owned by Mavet’s company Modernismo Publications (which would later become Mavety Media Group. When Dilettante folded in 1974 after 4 issues, Mavety offered to take over the magazine, which he relaunched in 1975 as Mandate. In the early years, Denver had a stake int he company, but he was eventually bought out by Mavety.
Maverty was also the co-owner of Torso with Donald Embinder, publisher of Blueboy. When Embinder’s involvement in Torso waned after the death of his lover, Maverty moved it to New York.
