Before getting into publishing, Mavety worked in distribution, including titles such as [[Colt]] and [[Dilettante]]. When Dilettante, edited by [[John Devere]], folded in 1974 after 4 issues, Mavety offered to take over the magazine, which he relaunched in 1975 as [[Mandate]].
Mavety was born in Canada. After a short time as a teacher, he launched a mail-order business, House of Books. He moved to N.Y.C. after a time in California.
